‘David Cameron is likely to put plans for to rescue thousands of refugees trapped in northern Iraq on hold after the US said that the crisis is not as bad as feared.
The Prime Minister yesterday signalled that RAF Chinook helicopters could be involved in the rescue operation amid fears that 30,000 refugees were trapped on Mount Sinjar.
However, the Pentagon this morning said that a rescue operation is “far less likely” after US special forces found that the number of refugees on the mountain is closer to 5,000.
They said that those who are on the mountain surrounded by Islamic State extremists are in “far better condition” than previously feared and have access to aid drops.’
