May 27 will be the first National Switch Off Day

Take action against Tories’ harmful policies by hitting them in the wallet

Sunday 24th May 2015 at 10:06 By David Icke

‘People across the country will be taking part in a different kind of protest – on the day of the state opening of Parliament.

May 27 will be the first National Switch Off Day, when thousands of people have already pledged to stop using gas and electricity, and stop shopping in non-local shops for 24 hours.

Organised by a varied group of campaigners, this will be the first in a series of multi-issue actions that will take place once a month. Reasons for taking part range from keeping the NHS public and tackling issues like overpriced parking in hospitals, to stopping benefit cuts, to issues affecting vulnerable people and their carers such as the cold weather benefits to the elderly, to keeping the Human Rights Act, to stopping fracking – and mostly that all members of the general public get a voice in matters that concern them.’

Tories could cut a fifth of staff at department that chases tax dodgers, union warns

The FDA union claims HMRC will lose up to 15,000 of its 64,000 staff – despite having to find an extra £5bn by cracking down on tax avoidance

Axe: HMRC could face huge job cuts – but George Osborne wants staff to tackle tax avoidance

Tory cuts could axe more than a fifth of staff at the department in charge of chasing tax dodgers, a union has warned.

It’s claimed HM Revenue and Customs will lose out as new waves of cuts spread across Whitehall, ditching up to 100,000 jobs.

That’s despite HMRC being in charge of a new tax avoidance crackdown that George Osborne claims will net Britain £5bn.

Dave Penman, general secretary of the FDA civil service union, says HMRC will suffer because other departments like education, health and foreign aid are better-protected.

And it won’t be able to track down tax dodgers without investing in expensive experts, he warned.

He told Mirror Online: “Tax avoidance is just one part of HMRC but it’s a critical one.

The lobbyist’s who paid millions into the Tory ‘general election’ piggy bank, want they’re financial payback.

Their reward is to be able to continue dodging tax payments by the millions and with less staff hounding their complicated private economic system, fraudulent tax dodging can commence unchallenged.

Our democracy serves the corporate oligarchs.

Greenpeace activists arrived at David Cameron’s very own home and set up a fracking site

It’s official: David Cameron today used the Queen’s Speech to launch his plan to change the law. He wants to rob us of our right to stop fracking firms drilling under our homes.

To do it, he’ll have to get the majority of MPs to vote for the plan. But lots of MPs are already unsure about fracking, especially in their own constituencies.

We’ve launched an emergency petition to MPs. If they hear from thousands of their voters that we want them to vote against David Cameron’s plan, they will start to understand what a backlash they could face.

https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/fracking-law2

This morning, just before the Queen’s Speech, Greenpeace activists arrived at David Cameron’s very own home and set up a fracking site.

fracking under Cameron's home

It’s already making news websites and getting the attention of MPs – but it’s voters they listen to most.  So sign to add your voice:
https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/fracking-law2

The fracking industry’s plans are on shaky ground. Just last week, Cuadrilla boss Francis Egan claimed that if firms like his aren’t allowed to drill under our homes without permission, fracking in the UK could grind to a halt [1].

I still can’t believe David Cameron is so happy to auction off Britain to the fossil fuel industry.  But I know that when hundreds of thousands of us come together, politicians can only turn away for so long. From protecting forests, to defending the Arctic and our oceans, we’re strong when we work together!

https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/fracking-law2

Thank you,

Richard and all of us at Greenpeace

PS: 74% of the British public are against David Cameron’s plan to allow companies to drill without permission [2]. So in the coming weeks, he’ll be going on a huge charm offensive, hoping to convince MPs. Sign the petition, and help push back:https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/fracking-law2

Update about ‘Balcombe Drilling: Cease the oil exploration activities of Cuadrilla in Balcombe.’ on Change.org

The Fracks in local democracy.
(Concerning the WSCC planning meeting to decide on Cuadrilla’s planning application)

Despite a petition of nearly five and a half thousand signatures, despite over 850 objections – West Sussex County Council chose to ignore the material objection that Cuadrilla has no social licence to be in Balcombe. Well informed and well researched speeches were delivered by residents, which only served to highlight the obvious lack of reading and thought that the voting councillors (with the exception of one – thank you Sue Mullins) had put into this planning meeting. It is a sad day for democracy when the committee, like every other body involved in this process from the EA to the DECC, dismisses some of the most serious concerns as ‘not in their remit’. Then whose responsibility are these concerns? It shows a ridiculous lack of foresight, when an exploration company is allowed to have its process considered piecemeal in separate planning applications, without considering the end-game of oil production close to residents. Thus, each new application is in part validated by the fact that the previous one was approved. Very clever Lord Browne!

lordjohnbrowne-p

Cuadrilla director Lord Browne

Back to our WSCC committee of elected representatives – evidence of health risks from flaring? Not their concern. Cuadrilla’s own researchers admit fluid can migrate up to 2000ft along fault plains and intend to put fluid down an uncased lateral borehole in a highly faulted area, within 1600ft of the aquifer- apparently nobody’s concern. Cuadrilla failed to include certain gases in their models of flaring emissions; have lost air samples and failed to consider the contour of the land so that the flare will actually pump chemicals out at more or less the level of our village (Lower Stumble is lower than Balcombe remember) -apparently nobody’s concern. Then of course there are the regulatory bodies that are supposed to protect us, but instead make assumptions that Cuadrilla has effectively self-regulated, which we know from past history that they have not. The HSE for example, have admitted they made no onsite checks of the well, yet this is part of their own best practice to ensure well failure does not occur. The WSCC and EA have then based their own permits on the idea that the well is, in fact, sound. This cannot be guaranteed, and as we have seen in Singleton, well failure does happen. Again – apparently nobody’s concern. Climate change? Clearly nobody’s concern, and certainly not the government’s, who admit climate change is occurring in one breath whilst redirecting subsidies away from renewables and into onshore oil and gas with the other. At what cost do we want our energy? We can only hope now, that an educated public will use their votes wisely.
By a concerned Balcombe resident.

As a result of the decision taken in this meeting Frack Free Balcombe Resident’s association has now written to WSCC to inform them that they are prepared to take the case to a Judicial Review on the basis that the decisions of the committee were unlawful. They were not made with due diligence and attention to a number of very important issues. Among these being the issue of flaring, lack of well checks and WSCC ignoring public opinion.

Please continue to spread the word about this petition, we hope, if the judicial review is successful, that it will be of use again. Also West Sussex County Council get emailed every time someone signs up.

Please continue to lobby, all those on the planning committee below took the decision to allow this planning permission to go ahead. If you are a WSCC resident or particularly in one of their wards, then they made a decision on your behalf. Crawley Town Hall- The Boulevard, Crawley, West Sussex. It is a Tory run council.

1. Party-politics has no place in local politics. The people in the community come first, not the political party.

2. Party-politics caused these insane ‘Cuts & Closures’ because councillors put their political party first – not the people in the
local community which they are supposed to represent.

3. Party-politics created the ‘Whipped Vote’ at County Hall last February on Valentine’s Day, which has caused the problems we are now seeing in our local communities*. All 44 party-political councillors voted for these insane ‘Cuts & Closures’. Not one disagreed with this moral insanity. Not even one abstained. Why? Because they put their party first, not the people they represent.

This political decision requires a moral and political response. That means we must vote on Thursday. We must vote for our children’s sake –and for our future.

If we care enough, we will vote on Thursday.

*Cuts to the Crawley Lifeline Service – a critical service for the
elderly & vulnerable.
*Closures to Crawley’s Children & Family Centre Sessions – a lifeline
support to many Mums with their babies.

Family’s agony over bedroom tax

Echo: Family's agony over bedroom tax

A FAMILY faces being made homeless as Basildon Council prepares for its first-ever controversial “bedroom tax” eviction.

The authority is taking Teresa Whitby, 59, to court on Friday to apply for possession of her home after she fell into rent arrears.

The Tory administration is thought to be one of the first authorities in the country to start evicting people who have fallen into arrears because of the benefit slash.

Angry campaigners called Basildon Council “the meanest in the country”.

Mrs Whitby claims about half of her £900 arrears have been caused by the spare room subsidy, dubbed the “bedroom tax”, which was introduced last year.

The Government scheme, which cuts benefits to social housing tenants deemed to have an empty room, was brought in to encourage people to move into smaller properties.

Mrs Whitby, husband Bill, 62, and their son, could now be evicted from their three-bedroom home.

They have struggled to cope since their housing benefit was cut by £15 a week.

She said: “I’ve called councillors, MPs, and have even been to a church to see if they can do anything, but I don’t think there’s anything anyone can do now.

“The stress has been unbelievable and I’m living in fear of being homeless.”

The couple moved into their home 40 years ago.

Mrs Whitby added: “We’ve been living in this town all our lives and my father helped build it.
