The family of David Clapson – the former soldier who recently died after his benefits were stopped as punishment for missing a meeting at the Jobcentre – have launched a petitioncalling for an inquiry into benefit sanctions.
In his sister’s own words:
“My brother, David Clapson, a diabetic ex-soldier, died starving and destitute because he was penalised by the Job Centre for missing a meeting.
“David had his £71.70 weekly allowance stopped meaning that he couldn’t afford food or electricity. He was penniless, starving and alone. His electricity card was out of credit meaning the fridge where he should have kept his diabetes insulin chilled was not working. Three weeks after his benefits were stopped he died from diabetic ketoacidosis – caused by not taking his insulin.
“David wasn’t a “scrounger”. He had worked for 29 years; 5 years in the Army – including two years in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, during the height of the troubles – 16 years with British Telecom, eight years with various other companies, and in recent years was a carer for our sick mother. When mum went into a home, David turned to the state for help, receiving benefits while he looked for work and taking unpaid work placements.
“When he died he had just £3.44 to his name, six tea bags, a tin of soup and an out-of-date can of sardines. A coroner also found he had no food in his stomach.
“People turn to the state when they are in need – that is what the system is for – a safety net for hard working people like my brother when they need a bit of support. That £71.70 a week was his lifeline. To withhold it from him for missing one meeting is cruel. And the heartbreaking thing is that he was really trying. CVs for job applications were found near David’s body. He had been on work placements, passed his fork lift truck certificate and had been on a computer training course.”

West Sussex is under threat. Fracking company Celtique Energie has two applications to drill in and around the South Downs National Park. And this is just the start.
But the good news is that we’ve already managed to delay both applications through thousands of objections. And now a local anti-fracking group is calling for all of West Sussex to be declared Frack-Free.
The local residents’ group Keep Kirdford and Wisborough ‘Green’ have set up a petition on the council’s website. Please support them by adding your name.
West Sussex sits on shale rock formations, which could hold significant resources of shale oil. And fracking companies are keen to exploit these resources. But if drilling goes ahead, it could put more pressure on local water supplies, increase traffic in the local lanes and threaten protected wildlife, such as bats and songbirds. And that’s before we’ve even mentioned the impacts on climate change.
We have less than two weeks to gather 3,000 signatures from anyone who lives, works or studies in West Sussex. If we reach 3,000 names the County Council will have to debate the petition at full Cabinet.
We’re already half way there. With just 1,500 more signatures, we can win a discussion about a Frack-Free West Sussex.
With hope and thanks,
Nikki and the fracking team

We the ‘people’ demand a Public Inquiry into Benefit Sanctions, Targets & Workfare – Iain Duncan Smith to be expelled from the House of Commons
The remit of this public inquiry must also look into the way disabled benefit claimants have been treated by the state & by any contractor including Atos Healthcare.
The remit of such an inquiry must also look into the benefit rates for claimants – described as ‘manifestly inadequate’ by the Council of Europe. UnemployedNet and Respect For the Unemployed & Benefit Claimants have responded to the ‘Independent Review of Sanctions’ – #OakleyReview

The disinformation peddled by Daily Mail columnists, Con-Demcabinet ministers and other politicians, most jobless people do not choose not to work because they fancy “a life on benefits,” a phraseChancellor George Osborne preachers at Tory conferences that was tellingly echoed by Ed Balls.
Long-term joblessness is rising under the coalition because it is an anti-jobs government. Hundreds of thousands of secure, skilled jobs have been axed – are still being axed – across the public sector. A survey by trade union GMB found 631,000 public-sector roles had been given the chop by autumn last year, a figure the government’s own projections suggest will exceed a million by the next election.
From workfare – which effectively provides forced below-minimum-wage labour to private firms at taxpayers’ cost – to ever increasing sanctions on jobseekers who can’t jump through a constantly changing set of hoops, people who are out of work have been exploited, punished and demonised by the Department for Work and Pensions and its sanctimonious henchmen Iain Duncan Smith.
In a letter published on the morning of the G4S shareholders meeting, renowned artists, academics and writers have called on G4S to end all support for Israel’s illegal military occupation of Palestine.
Join Archbishop Desmond Tutu, artists, writers and activists Angela Davis, Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Roger Waters, filmmakers Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, in calling on G4S to end its contract with Israel’s prison authorities. Add your name to the letter today!
G4S operates and maintains security systems at the Ofer prison, located in the occupied West Bank, and for the Kishon and Moskobiyyeh detention/interrogation facilities at which human rights organisations have documented systematic torture and ill treatment of Palestinian prisoners, including child prisoners held in solitary confinement.
G4S helps the Israeli Prison Service to run prisons inside Israel that hold prisoners from occupied Palestinian territory despite the Fourth Gevena Convention prohibition of the transfer of prisoners from occupied territory into the territory of the occupier.
Through its involvement in Israel’s prison system, G4S is complicit in violations of international law and participates in Israel’s use of mass incarceration as a means by which to dissuade Palestinians from protesting Israel’s systematic human rights abuses.
G4S also provides equipment and services to the Israeli military checkpoints in the West Bank that form part of the route of Israel’s illegal Wall and to the terminals isolating the occupied and besieged territory of Gaza.
G4S’ role in Israel’s brutal occupation and abhorrent prison system is unacceptable and must end.

Today David Cameron announced plans to let fracking companies drill under our homes without asking us. Pictures by Street Democracy.
Street Democracy writes:
Fracking is another blow to our already fragile eco system.
We are witnessing psychopathic greed, selfishly careering us all towards imminent death with the contamination of our natural water’s down underground, with no concerns about this at all.
It is insanity to believe the industrialisation of fracking isn’t going to harm our planet, causing death zones of greater magnitude destroying our wildlife, our plants and eventually cause serious water shortages!
It is the extinction button these greedy corporate psychopaths are willing to press at the expense and great cost of our planet.
The fossil fuel industry with aggressive drilling technology is ecological suicide, by venal politicians fondling their pockets for more profits.
These legions of faceless, nameless bureaucrats are sacrificing our sacred planet and believe themselves to be unaccountable to the damage they are causing.
It is time people started to wake up!
Hydro fracking is an aggressive and dangerous method of extracting natural pockets of gas and our current political apparatus is ignoring the public’s pleas and much educated demands by saying ‘no’ to this exploitation.
The evil’s crippling our economy, are planning to cripple earth also systematically stealing earth’s natural resources with a model of corrupt capitalism, a model of pain and death that has strangled democracy further into obliviation.

Dear Street Democracy,
Today David Cameron announced plans to let fracking companies drill under our homes without asking us.
He suggested an appalling change to the law that almost three-quarters of the people in Britain oppose.
The Prime Minister is trying to put fracking company profits before our right to decide what happens underneath our homes. But MPs will have the final say on whether these changes become law.
So we’ve joined up with our friends at Greenpeace to launch an urgent petition to all MPs.
Just last week we celebrated three years of keeping our homes and communities free from dirty, dangerous fracking. The fracking industry and Government know they’re losing this struggle. That’s why they’re trying to change the rules. But we can stop fracking companies from ripping up our countryside and polluting the climate.
You’ve helped communities across the country hold back fracking in their area. Now we need your help to make sure MPs don’t let the Government take away the right to object to fracking underneath our homes. Let’s stand up to this disgraceful bullying tactic together.
Nikki & the fracking team
Fossil fuel companies fracking under people’s homes without asking them. That’s what David Cameron wants. And he’s sneakily trying to change the law to make it happen.
Please don’t let him get away with it. Sign our petition below. And share it far and wide. Thank you.
Why the petition? We need as many MPs as possible to vote against this change in law.
A petition with tens of thousands of our names will put great pressure on MPs to vote no.
What’s more, we’ve teamed up with Greenpeace to get as many names as possible.
Please sign now
74% of people in Britain are against changes to trespass laws that would allow fracking companies to drill under homes without permission. I urge you to oppose government plans to change the law and vote against it when you have the chance.
It’s official: David Cameron today used the Queen’s Speech to launch his plan to change the law. He wants to rob us of our right to stop fracking firms drilling under our homes.
To do it, he’ll have to get the majority of MPs to vote for the plan. But lots of MPs are already unsure about fracking, especially in their own constituencies.
We’ve launched an emergency petition to MPs. If they hear from thousands of their voters that we want them to vote against David Cameron’s plan, they will start to understand what a backlash they could face.
This morning, just before the Queen’s Speech, Greenpeace activists arrived at David Cameron’s very own home and set up a fracking site.
It’s already making news websites and getting the attention of MPs – but it’s voters they listen to most. So sign to add your voice:
The fracking industry’s plans are on shaky ground. Just last week, Cuadrilla boss Francis Egan claimed that if firms like his aren’t allowed to drill under our homes without permission, fracking in the UK could grind to a halt .
I still can’t believe David Cameron is so happy to auction off Britain to the fossil fuel industry. But I know that when hundreds of thousands of us come together, politicians can only turn away for so long. From protecting forests, to defending the Arctic and our oceans, we’re strong when we work together!
Richard and all of us at Greenpeace
PS: 74% of the British public are against David Cameron’s plan to allow companies to drill without permission . So in the coming weeks, he’ll be going on a huge charm offensive, hoping to convince MPs. Sign the petition, and help push back:https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/fracking-law2
Please sign this petition to get Iain Duncan Smith expelled from Parliament if nothing else, but also to humanise the benefit system.
To banish our ‘Punishing State British work camps’ system at the Job Centre.
To banish this highly ‘vocally intensified’ social disdain controlled by a Tory psychopathic main frame of job seeking for all unemployed job seekers.
To rid of scorn and place empathy and compassion into the welfare system towards innately decent, sensitive poor.
The very same poor who if found a decent work position available, where all workers regardless of position were paid a decent wage and spoken to nicely, would happily oblige in a full working week.
This is unrealistic as the lowest paid jobs come with the lowest amount of respect.
We however at the Job Centre, experience a commanding dialogue.
A work camp economic plantation filled with aggressive monetary sanctions by benefit advisor’s who regurgitate the Tories gutter politics about the unemployed.
The poor being lazy and are a bunch of scroungers!
Well who wants to work for minimum wage that gets you nothing but sore hands, aching feet and placed into a social black hole?
Who wants a meaningless job with some psychotic power head no body desperately hungry of their tiny power, with no people skills as their supervisor?
Who wants to be treated like garbage by work employers equally unhappy with their jobs, who take out their frustrations upon those in lesser roles?
Who wants the social stigma of worthless and pointless, working hard heavy weight back breaking labour with no job prospects, no decent pay, but long hours and spoken too like your crap?
No one, so don’t expect the poor to jump up early every day to fill such job vacancies and be made to feel like crap even before they start their work day.
So the poor visit the Job Centre in the hope of finding a job of self satisfaction and fulfilment.
A life changing career to elevate themselves, those closet to them like their families to a higher level of social grace is sorely disappointed when face to face with grey stone cold faces of discontent glaring back at them.
If life is measured by economic systems then the poor are de-valued every day and is hardly the incentive to drive the work force into a healthy economic environment.
It is essential we caste out the disdain treatment from Job Centre staff penalising people by financially sanctioning their benefits is both nasty and cruel.

Unemployed lad commits suicide after being worn down by Job Centre ‘bullying bureaucracy’ Martin Hadfield, 20, an unemployed gardener desperate for work killed himself after he was left “demoralised” by hours of form-filling at his local Jobcentre.
According to his family his period out of work and 10 Downing Street red tape left him feeling “put down with no self worth.” Just 24 hours after a meeting where job centre staff invited him to a “follow up” meeting, Martin was found #hanged at his flat in Tottington, near Bury, Greater Manchester.
Following an inquest today, his stepfather Peter O’Gorman, 47, a car valeter said: “Martin was obviously never a #statistic to us but in the last months of his life he became a statistic to other people.
“He was a statistic by being out of work, a statistic when he went into the job centre and now he a statistic by #killing himself. “Sadly this statistic seems to be growing especially in boys Martin’s age who are….
